Each year, the CitizenCampus course offers about forty selected students the opportunity to take part in a living lab-based experience. During this program, students will join public debate on scientific issues that are crucial for the future of our society, by exchanging views with socio-economic, political and research players.

The course welcomes 2nd-year undergraduate students to PhD students from all fields of study. They are the very first to experience this innovative pedagogy.

The objectives of the course

At the end of the programme, students will be able to scrutinise societal issues and debate issues involving Science with relevance and curiosity. They will know how to draw on collective intelligence to express an informed opinion. On the basis of this experience, they will have the tools to actively participate in the public debate and contribute to its renewal. They will acquire skills at an even faster pace and these skills will be very useful in their professional careers and their future as citizens (such as reflection, analysis, open-mindedness and creativity, commitment, attentiveness, collaboration, etc.). Finally, the CitizenCampus programme is a great opportunity for students to widen their cultural horizons and professional network.

What students acquire at the end of the course

Knowing how to take a step back, analyse:
  • Understanding and partaking in the changes of society;
  • Becoming familiar with scientific approach and reasoning;
  • Understanding the positions shared by players during a debate; Analysing their own position and becoming aware of its biases;
  • Ability to make decisions on complex issues, even outside of one’s field of study.
Knowing how to express oneself, set out arguments:
  • Drawing on collective intelligence;
  • Bringing forward an argument or a position, negotiating;
  • Working with people from different cultures and levels.
